The Dallas Mavericks have made a bold statement about their future by officially naming Cooper Flagg as the face of the franchise following the trade of Anthony Davis.
In an unprecedented moment for a teenage player in the NBA, Flagg is capturing attention across the league. Following a significant trade that sent Davis—a ten-time All-Star who joined the Mavericks in a controversial deal involving the fan-favorite Luka Doncic—Dallas is signaling its commitment to building around this promising rookie.
The timing of this decision was inevitable, and it came to fruition with Dallas's recent three-team trade that brought back an impressive lineup of assets including Khris Middleton, AJ Johnson, and Marvin Bagley III, along with two first-round picks and three second-round selections from Washington. As for Flagg's rookie year, it seems destined to be marked by struggles, particularly as the Mavericks appear poised for a second consecutive season without playoff appearances following their disappointing exit in the 2024 NBA Finals against Boston.
Jason Kidd, the head coach and a pivotal player during the franchise's only championship in 2011, believes that Flagg possesses the qualities of a future leader and the determination necessary to turn the tides for the team. "The bigger the stage, the better he performs," Kidd remarked. "He wants to win. Those high-scoring games are overshadowed by losses, and he's eager to change that narrative.
