Fiji's New Tertiary Institution: Boosting Education Tourism and Pacific Hub (2026)

Fiji is set to become an educational powerhouse! A brand new tertiary institution has officially been registered, opening up a world of higher learning opportunities for students not just in Fiji, but across the entire Pacific region. This exciting development promises to reshape the educational landscape and offer more choices than ever before.

Oceania Education and Technology Solutions has unveiled three distinct subsidiaries today: the Oceania Institute of Technology, Pacific Study Hub, and Canterbury Language Academy. This strategic launch is the brainchild of Founder and CEO Hasmukh Lal, who envisions making Fiji a premier destination for education tourism.

But here's where it gets truly ambitious... The initiative is backed by a substantial $1 million investment. A significant portion of this funding comes from Mr. Lal's personal commitment, which helped secure a loan from HFC Bank. The goal? To equip students with essential skills in both TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) and traditional academic fields.

Mr. Lal draws a compelling parallel with Australia, which reportedly earns a staggering $51.5 billion from international education and tourism annually. He points out that this figure translates to roughly $80 billion Fijian, a sum that is about 19 times larger than Fiji's national budget. "We are just two to three hours ahead of Australia, and our airline is well connected to most countries," he explains, highlighting Fiji's strategic advantage. "I saw the opportunity that we have huge potential to drive education tourism and also position Fiji as an attached destination with Australian universities to attract international students."

And this is the part most people miss: The registration process was rigorous, involving five to six months of stringent compliance checks. This thorough vetting ensures the institution meets high standards. Now, students can look forward to pursuing certificates, diplomas, and advanced diplomas in crucial areas like technology, banking, and finance.

Gracing the launch as the chief guest, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka, expressed his confidence in Fiji's future. He emphasized that this new institution will not only diversify the economy but also strengthen educational pathways and firmly establish Fiji as a beacon of knowledge, innovation, and opportunity within the Pacific.

What do you think? Is Fiji's ambition to become an education tourism hub realistic, or are there significant hurdles to overcome? Share your thoughts in the comments below – we'd love to hear your perspective!
